10 Client Green Flags - From People Who Love What They Do.

Great work doesn’t happen by accident - it’s built through strong relationships, mutual trust and a shared sense of purpose.

At SALAD (and across our Studio collective), we’re lucky to work with brilliant clients and creatives who understand that the best results come from collaboration, clarity and respect.

So instead of talking about red flags, we’re flipping the script!  Here are some of SALAD's and our Studio collaborators’ top client green flags - positive signs that a working relationship is going to be a good one.

If you’re nodding along… we should probably talk.

1. A Clear Brief (Even if It’s Not Perfect)

You don’t need all the answers - that’s what you hire agencies and freelancers for.

But a clear sense of what you’re trying to achieve, who it’s for and why it matters makes all the difference. The best briefs give direction without boxing creativity in.

“I love it when a client comes with a really nice brief. Bonus points if there’s also a reference to work that I’ve done before! Showing why they want to hire me or like my style.” -  Carlo Paloni, Photographer

2. Trust in the People You’ve Hired

A huge green flag is when clients trust the expertise they’ve brought in.

That doesn’t mean blind agreement - it means openness, curiosity and a willingness to be guided. The strongest work happens when clients feel confident enough to let ideas breathe.

“When a client trusts you with the brief and the creative process - offering clear initial direction, but not micromanaging every step - the end result is always stronger. That level of trust creates space for better ideas, smoother collaboration and ultimately a better outcome for both sides.” - Amy Blair, Ruby Goop

3. Open, Honest Communication

Clear communication beats constant communication, every time.

Clients who are upfront, responsive and transparent (especially when things change) create an environment where everyone can do their best work - without guesswork or tension.

4. A Collaborative Mindset

The best clients don’t see agencies or freelancers as suppliers. They see them as partners.

Collaboration means sharing ideas, inviting discussion and being excited by the process, not just the end result. It’s when things start to feel like ‘we’, instead of ‘us and them’.

“Having a detailed brief alongside a moodboard is always great, especially when the client is open to expanding that moodboard using our references as well. One big collaborative effort that lifts the project overall.” -  Keir & Ralph, Clubhouse Paradiso

5. Respect for Time and Craft

Great clients understand that good work takes time. And that creative thinking is a valuable skill, not an afterthought.

Whether it’s realistic timelines, proper feedback windows or respecting boundaries, this kind of consideration always shows in the final output.

6. Decisiveness (With Room for Discussion)

Indecision kills momentum.

Clients who can listen, reflect and then make clear decisions keep projects moving and teams energised. You can always refine, but forward motion is a powerful thing.

“A thorough brief and specific feedback might take a little longer upfront, but it makes the whole project run smoother in the long run.And I can focus my time on doing the work and delivering something amazing.” - Fiona McHardy, Sunee Studio

7. Paying on Time (Every Time!)

It might sound basic, but it matters. A lot.

Paying on time shows professionalism, respect and integrity. It builds trust quickly and sets the tone for a healthy, long-term working relationship.

8. Realistic Expectations

Ambition is encouraged. Magic overnight results? Less so.

Clients who understand what’s achievable within budgets, timelines and scope allow ideas to be ambitious, yet realistic. Which is where the strongest outcomes can thrive..

9. Recognition and Credit

A simple thank you, a tag, a mention or a recommendation goes a really long way.

Clients who acknowledge the people behind the work help to build sustainable creative communities. And that generosity always comes back around.

10. A Shared Sense of Purpose

The biggest green flag of all?

When everyone around the table genuinely cares about what they’re building. Shared values, shared excitement and a shared belief in the work, create working relationships that last far beyond one project.

At SALAD, we’re proud to work with clients who bring ambition, curiosity and clarity into the process - and we’re always excited to meet more of them! If this list sounds like you, there’s a good chance we’d work brilliantly together.

Is this you? We’d love to hear from you. Drop us an email and let’s start the conversation - hello@salad.social.
